Shipping from china to us

I guarantee there are millions of people who have been dreaming about this business model: import the right Chinese products and sell to various US markets. Although finding product suppliers on Alibaba is easy, many people still give up this business plan because they don't know the methods and costs of shipping products from China to the US. The fact is that over 90 percent of Alibaba's consumer manufacturers are not qualified in all forms of distribution, so they are more likely to overcharge shipping costs. Or many of them choose to use their freight forwarder to pick up freight in their warehouse or China's port.

To people who are new to import from China, which sounds very intimidating. So, I wrote this article to help you understand the estimated cost of using seven big shipping from China to the US. You can, therefore, do the calculations on your own to determine whether a product is worth exporting or which shipping solution is most cost-effective. NOTE: The price of shipment is not set for each shipping process. The article also provides you with a shipping rate reference range based on my experience in the industry.

Part 1 Express Shipping from China to the US

Shipping from china to us

There’s plenty of information on Google regarding the Express companies like FedEx, UPS, and DHL. Therefore, I am not going to waste your time listing the top Express couriers here. Instead, I’ll get straight to the point and answer the two more important questions:

  • When is it more cost-effective to choose to express? And;
  • What type of goods can be transported via express?
  • Which Express Company is Better?
  • Express Company FedEx UPS DHL
  • Express Company FedEx UPS DHL

Express is a relatively more comfortable mode of transportation when compared with sea or air freight. And which is also the fastest shipping from China to the US. Firstly, you won’t have to bother about custom clearances or duty payment, etc.

Custom Clearance and Duty

First, whether the items are shipped to the east of the United States or the west, delivery charges are expected to be the same. All you have to do, then, is to locate an express service that will give you a fair quote and wait for the items to be shipped to your address. Yeah, it's so easy! Also, 95 percent of consumer samples and small quantities of high-value products are expressly delivered. To online sellers who are in a rush to restock, such as Amazon sellers, express shipping is mostly extremely appropriate.

Moving on…

You’ve all heard of FedEx, UPS, DHL. But which one is most reliable and cost-effective for shipping from China. I recommend FedEx and UPS. In general, DHL’s customs clearance process is slower than that of FedEx and UPS. Furthermore, sometimes, DHL’s shipping cost from China to the US is also relatively higher.

Comparison Between FedEx UPS DHL

As for FedEx or UPS shipping costs, you should tell your Alibaba distributor or freight forwarder to give you a real-time rate, then choose a cheaper one. The shipping cost of the express is quite volatile relative to sea freight and can even alter every week. During the high season, shipping costs escalate exponentially like a month between Christmas or Thanksgiving. Christmas High Season Shipping Price from Express Company While at the same time, during the low season, prices could drop substantially.

Express Shipping Costs from China to the USA

Keep in mind that the official price is generally higher, whether FedEx, UPS, or DHL. -The express carrier also offers various incentives depending on the shipper's annual deliveries (your manufacturer or freight forwarder), which further impacts the rates. If your Chinese distributor does not regularly use FedEx to ship goods from China to the US, he might locate a cheaper express agent or tell him to send the rights to the US. You're going to get a better cost of shipping. Therefore, apart from the seasonal impact and the amount of space left in the plane, the difference in the discount of the agents also affects the cost of express delivery.

I am moving on to the price estimate for FedEx delivery.

While the delivery charges are often fluctuating, Fedex's rate is still fixed within a specific range. You can quickly determine the delivery cost to your address using the comparison price I provide in this article and factoring in the other influencers mentioned above. FedEx allows distribution to the global target and market, also known as IP and IE. IP transit time is slower than IE transit time.

FedEx International Priority vs. Economic

In general, IP takes 2-3 working days, and IE takes 4-6 working days. I call it a small package below 20KG, and cargo above 21KG. Refer to the tables below to check out the price estimate.

Firstly, for the small package (<21KG):

Fedex IP (<21KG)
0.5-5.5KG Cost $ 6-11KG Cost $ 11.5-16.5KG Cost $ 17-20.5KG Cost $
0.5 25 6 97 11.5 169 17 241
1 31 6.5 103 12 175 17.5 248
1.5 38 7 110 12.5 182 18 254
2 44 7.5 116 13 189 18.5 261
2.5 51 8 123 13.5 195 19 267
3 57 8.5 130 14 202 20 274
3.5 64 9 136 14.5 208 20.5 280
4 70 9.5 143 15 215 _ _
4.5 77 10 149 15.5 221 _ _
5 84 10.5 156 16 228 _ _
5.5 90 11 162 16.5 234 _ _

Fedex IE (<21KG)
0.5-5.5KG Cost $ 6-11KG Cost $ 11.5-16.5KG Cost $ 17-20.5KG Cost $
0.5 24 6 72 11.5 112 17 161
1 29 6.5 77 12 127 17.5 167
1.5 36 7 82 12.5 131 18 171
2 43 7.5 87 13 136 18.5 175
2.5 50 8 92 13.5 139 19 180
3 53 8.5 97 14 144 20 186
3.5 56 9 102 14.5 148 20.5 190
4 61 9.5 107 15 152 _ _
4.5 66 10 112 15.5 152 _ _
5 70 10.5 115 16 155 _ _
5.5 71 11 119 16.5 158 _ _
Then, for the cargo (>21KG):

Fedex IP ( >21KG) Fedex IE ( >21KG)
21KG-70KG $7-$7.5 21KG-70KG $6.5-$6.7
>70KG $6.3-$7 >70KG $6-$6.5

The tables above clearly show that IP delivery is more expensive than IE. So, generally, FedEx IP is the best choice for sending product samples. However, if it is CARGO >21KG), I suggest you choose FedEx IE. Also, please note that the goods containing lithium batteries, powder, and liquid are not allowed to be shipped by official FedEx. FedEx Refuse to Ship Lithium Battery, And you’ll say, “I want to ship these products by express, you have a better solution? ” Yes. Some express agents will help you ship the goods to Hong Kong first. And then send them to the United States by FedEx or DHL of Hong Kong. Of course, the cost of shipping such sensitive goods is more expensive, usually around $10/kg or more.

Dimensional Weight VS Real Weight

For express and air freight, you should pay special attention to the problem of charged weight. So, is accused weight calculated by the “kg” – its real weight or its practical volume? If the size of the goods is more significant than its actual weight, charges are applied according to the amount. For instance, if you ship a huge foam of 100cm x100cm x 100cm, which weighs 20kg. Then the express company will not charge you by its real weight (20kg) since the size will of the package be substantial and will occupy significant space. Interestingly, the charges are not calculated as per the volume, as well. The costs are determined by dimensional weight.

Here’s the formula to calculate it,

Dimensional Weight = Length(cm) x Width(cm) x Height(cm)/5000.

Dimensional Weight Calculation

Let’s go back to foam example.

Suppose you need to ship one piece of a large 100cm x 100cm x 100cm foam weighing 20KG.

What will be its dimensional weight?

Let’s calculate

Dimensional weight=100cm x 100cm x 100cm/5000=200kg,

So,you see, Its dimensional weight is far larger than its actual weight.

Hence the express will charge you by 200kg.

He measures the charged weight for all the products and then compares the dimensional weight with the actual weight to assess the loaded influence. As for customs duties, FedEx is duty-free if the value of the goods is less than $800. When you ask your supplier to help you deliver products from Fedex, it is better to pay your supplier the fee in advance. Even if you've got it

Part 2 Air Freight from China to the USA

Let's pass on to air freight after meeting the cost estimates of express delivery. Essentially, both domestic and express air freight use aircraft as a method for transporting goods. What are the differences between the two, and when do you want to show yourself, and when do you prefer air freight? Don't worry; you're going to know the answer soon.

The Differences Between Air Freight and Express

Undeniably, express delivery is quite simple and straight-forward. But what about air freight? Shipping via air freight is a bit more complicated, and its import and export procedures are similar to the traditional sea freight.

It includes the following three steps:

  • Local logistics in China and export process.
  • Air shipping from Chinese airport to American airport.
  • Local logistics in the USA and import process.
  • Usually, if you have more than 500 KG of cargo, choosing air freight is cost-effective.

Loading Cargos Before Air Freight

At the same time, if your cargo quantity is below 300kg, you may not want to consider air freight as express offers a better choice. Now, what if the cargo quantity is between 300-500kg? At this time, I will not recommend either air freight or express. The price of air freight is always changing just like the express prices, so it’s impossible to say which is cheaper. It all boils down to real-time prices. There are also lots of irregular discounts to express. For example, FedEx is less expensive than air freight if the plane of FedEx has much space left.

What is All-Included Air Freight Cost to the US

As described above, you can ship by air freight if the cargo quantity exceeds 500 kg. But what about air freight costs Whether you're going to contact a freight forwarder or working with an Alibaba distributor, it's important to ask for the rate for the whole shipping process. It is the all-inclusive price that includes the shipping costs from China airport/port to your destination.

Air Freight Factory to Buyer Process

Whether you want to send your goods to your country's port or have them delivered directly to your door is essential to decide in advance. Often, many freight forwarders or vendors quote you the shipping cost to lure you from China airport-to-destination airport. Of course, in the beginning, such prices seem low, but there are hidden charges. It does not include the value of customs clearance and the expense of the domestic property. Airfreight is, of course, the same as rail, and its cost is also subject to changes in real-time.

Airfreight costs per kg for your reference

Here, I will give you an air freight all-included price range. More than 500kg, and the all-included price by air freight is around $5.5/kg. To make an intuitive comparison with the express, I will also give you the express price here, $6.5/kg. Note, this price I gave you doesn’t include the local logistics cost in China (From China factory to China airport). Shipping time for air freight =Time required for booking shipping space+flight time+Local delivery time in the USA. It usually takes 4-7 days in total.

The Cost Breakdown Of Air Freight

You can only seek help from your China distributor or freight forwarder while delivering the goods if you're a newbie. Just note the shipping costs mentioned in the article, and you're good to go. Many importers do the shipping process on their own, though. So, you're sure to be interested in the next part. Unlike Express, air freight has its formula for calculating the paid air freight weight that you can use to calculate.

Importing from China to the USA

You must remember the dimensional formula of express:

Dimensional Weight = Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm)/5000
But, the dimensional formula of air freight is slightly different than this:
Dimensional Weight = Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm)/6000

So, if you’re shipping your goods yourself, you should know the cost of each part of the air freight as it’s not just an all-inclusive price. Usually, while sourcing products from Alibaba, most of the suppliers will quote you FOB price.

FOB Price Alibaba Quotation

This means your Chinese supplier is responsible for the transpiration from a Chinese factory to the Chinese airport.

Here, air freight is divided into two steps:

  • The cost from China airport to an American airport.
  • The cost of an American airport to your door.
  • Also, there are other costs as well, including Chinese export costs and American custom clearance costs.

Shipping cost (FOB) = Cost for air shipping from Chinese airport to American airport + American customs clearance cost+ Local logistics cost in the USA. However, for the accurate cost of American customs clearance and local logistics in the USA, you have to ask your local freight forwarder. Additionally, there is also a little difference between the cost of air shipping from Chinese airport to American airport and sea freight. As it depends on the type of cargo and the destination airport, there is a significant variation in the cost. That’s all for FOB. No, let’s move further to EXW. It means that one more step will be added to your FOB, and you’ll be responsible for the transportation from the Chinese factory to the port of shipment in China.

It implies, besides the cost of FOB, you’ll also have to add on the price for logistics in China and export process. Shipping cost(EXW) = Local logistics cost in China + China export cost + Cost for air shipping from Chinese airport to American airport + American customs clearance cost + Local logistics cost in the USA. As you can see, the cost of air freight is not fixed, and there are some additional costs that you’ve to consult by yourself, it makes your estimation very complicated. For a rough calculation of shipping costs, you can refer to the price of FedEx.

Part 3 Sea Freight from China to the USA

Now, let’s move on to sea freight.Sea freight is the most complex shipping method. But, you need not worry as this guide will make the process transparent and straightforward for you.

Loading Before Sea Freight

If the quantity of your goods exceeds 2CBM, you should consider sea freight. Just like air freight. Firstly, this guide will provide you with an all-included price so you can compare the prices and roughly calculate the shipping cost. This cost includes the delivery to your door but excludes the local logistics cost in China. NO HURRY, before that, I have something else to show you. Less Than Container Load (LCL) and Full Container Load (FCL)

The cargo shipped by the sea freight is carried out in containers.

If the quantity of your goods is small and its volume is less than 15CBM, the freight forwarder will help you ship your products by LCL. It implies you have to share a container with other importers because your cargo load is less than a box. LCL use CBM (Cubic Meter) as the unit to calculate the freight.

What's FCL now? You can fill one or more containers if the cargo quantity is high enough. The freight is measured based on the whole container in this situation. It will usually be cheaper than freight from LCL. In contrast, the container design is divided primarily into three types:

Full container load 20”GP 40”GP 40”HQ
CBM contained
1 CBM = 1 Cubic Meter

What is All-Included Sea Freight Cost to the US

Again, the price listed here will allow you to measure the shipping cost roughly. For bulk freight, that is to say. LCL, I will give the price for your connection to the West of the United States, the Middle States, the East of the United States. Nevertheless, I can only provide for your comparison the value of the Los Angeles port for the FCL rate. This is because the price varies significantly from China to a different American terminal. And in the U.S., there are over 100 ports. The shipping company's costs for sea freight are shifting in real-time. So, you can ask our customer representative directly if you want to know the specific value to your terminal. They can help you with contacting the shipping company and offering you a real-time quotation.

The following table will give you an idea of the CBM and container shipping rates:

USA 3-5CBM 5-10CBM 10 CBM+ 20”GP 40”HQ
US West ($) 310 240 180 3700 4200 ($) 340 290 240 _ _
US East ($) 370 320 260 _ _

And, here’s how you can estimate the shipping cost of your products based on these. It’ll also give you a better estimate of the profit of your products. So, how do you calculate freight rates? Here is a real-life example, you want to purchase 400 red wine glasses from China, and the size of the red wine cup with the package is 19cm x 23cm x 19cm, which you want to ship to Los Angeles (western United States).

The total CBMs for the 400 PCS will be:
400 x19cm x23cm x19cm/106 =3.3CBM
So, the total shipping cost will be $310*3.3CBM=$1,023.
Then, the average shipping cost of a wine glass will be:
Total shipping cost/400 units=$1023/400=$2.56

The Cost Breakdown Of Sea Freight

To help you measure a smooth and rough shipping cost, the all-inclusive price is. So I'm going to divide the process of sea freight into three stages and display the value in each step. If you want to hear all about the process of sea freight and its quality, keep reading. Or skip this guide to my last part. Let's learn about the composition of sea freight under FOB and EXW, as discussed in Airfreight. Now, you have to wonder why these two are again, not any other form of exchange. Okay, under these two terms, 90 percent of the trade is done. For example, if you purchase goods on Alibaba, suppliers usually offer you a FOB and EXW price.

The price of the EXW is just the value of the material, meaning that your manufacturer will not help you deliver the products to the shipping terminal. The FOB price, however, involves product costs and local logistics costs in China (Chinese shipping port factory). Yes, it's that! Now, let's see the same for a much simpler description through an equation. Your supplier will help you to ship your goods directly to the shipping port at FOB. After that, the part you need to pay for sea freight will be:

Shipping cost=Cost for sea freight from a Chinese port to America port +American customs clearance cost + Local logistics cost in the USA

Your manufacturer will not help you deliver the goods to the shipping port on the EXW basis. In this scenario, the shipping costs= international logistics costs in China + Chinese export costs + Sea freight costs from a Chinese port to America port + American customs clearance costs + International logistics costs in the United States will be the portion of the sea freight you need to pay. As you are now acquainted with the overall shipping price parts, let us learn more about each part's cost. Price in China: This includes the cost of delivering the products to the port of delivery for the factory/supplier and the amount of exporting China.

If it is bulk cargo (Goods quantity is less than container load), the price will generally be around $10 -$30/CBM. It depends on the distance from the factory to the port, and the volume of the goods. Smaller the size, expensive the freight will be.

China export cost: It includes booking costs, export operating costs, and customs documents costs. It is generally around $100-$300. If it is LCL (bulk cargo, less than one container), the cost will be $100-$200. However, if it is FCL (Full container load), the cost is about $300. So, if you have 5CBM bulk goods, the cost in China will be:

($10-$30) x 5CBM+($100-$200) ˜ $150-$350

The cost of ocean freight is the cost of the Chinese port to America port.

China Shipping

Similarly to air freight, ocean freight is quoted by the shipping company, and the price is not fixed. For a real-life example, when you book an air ticket, you’re most likely to get a 50-60% discount if most of the seats on the plane are vacant. But, in the peak season, tickets are quite expensive (Full price). Also, the amount of the shipping cost to the United States east, middle, and west of the different ports are different. As there are more than 100 ports in the US, it’ll be challenging to give all the prices.

Below is the list of the prices of Los Angeles and New York.

The actual cost depends on the real-time quotation by the shipping company.

  • Bulk Cargo(Less Than Container Load) Full Container Load (FCL)20” GP Full Container Load (FCL)40” HQ
  • Ningbo – New York $75/CBM $2100/Container $2600/Container
  • Ningbo – Los Angeles $70/CBM $1500/Container $1600/Container
  • Remember the 20”GP and 40”HQ?20”GP=28CBM,40”HQ=68CBM.
  • Cost in the local US: It includes US customs clearance, customs duties, and regional logistics cost in the US.

For this cost, you must consult an American customs clearance company or a local freight forwarder as it is a much simpler and more efficient way. Let’s move on to the next part of the article.

Part 4 A smart and cost-effective shipping solution (SFUC & AFUC )

Now, what are SFUC & AFUC?

Let’s start with SFC.

SFUC—-Sea Freight UPS Combined

Generally, the shipping time for sea freight is about 30-45 days. Besides the shipping time on the sea, the local logistics in the USA is also quite slow. Now, the question arises, is there a faster and cost-effective way than traditional sea freight? Indeed, there is! To remedy this problem, many Chinese freight forwarders are providing such a shipping method. They will help you ship the goods to the nearest port to you in the same way as traditional sea freight.

But, unlike traditional sea freight, UPS is responsible for local logistics in the US. It means transporting goods to your address as soon as the goods arrive at the port. This makes the whole shipping process at least ten days faster than the traditional sea freight. Not all freight forwarders provide this service, so there is no unified English name for this type of transportation. But, I prefer to call it Sea Freight UPS Combined– –SFC. Now, let’s check out the price.

  • USA 100KG+ 300KG+ 500KG+ 1000KG+
  • US West ($) $1.5
  • ($) $1.6
  • US East ($) $1.8

Note: For some goods with high taxes like textiles, hardware, and accessories, some freight forwarders will charge you extra, i.e., $0.3-$0.4 per kg.

Now, you must be wondering, why doesn’t SFUC use CBM to calculate the cost? It is because after arriving at the port of the US, UPS is responsible for the delivery, unlike traditional sea freight that is delivered by a truck when your goods arrive at the port. As the express(UPS) is calculated according to kg, the shipping cost of SFUC is also calculated by kg, not using the CBM or container in traditional sea freight. Therefore, SFUC is one of the leading shipping methods directly from China to Amazon FBA because of its fast shipping time and efficient customs clearance.

Shipping from China- to Amazon FBA

AFUC—Air Freight UPS Combined

Although express is fast, it’s very costly. So, many importers ask – “Is there a cheaper mode of transportation than Express but won’t take much longer than the express?” Of course, there is away. Like SFUC, UPS is also responsible for the local delivery of goods within the United States after your goods arrive at the airport. It is called Air Freight UPS Combined.

Air Freight UPS Combined

Let’s check its price in the table below. The exact amount is subject to the real-time quotation.

  • USA 21 KG+ 51 KG+ 71 KG+ 101 KG+ 301 KG+ 501 KG+ 1001KG+
  • US West $) 5 4.8 4.3 3.9 3.9 3.9 3.8
  • ($) 5.2 4.9 4.5 4.1 4 4 3.9
  • US East ($) 5.3 5 4.9 4.5 4.4 4.3 4.3
  • Express takes 3-5 working days, and air freight takes 4-7 working days.

However, AFUC takes 11-15 working days. Also, AFUC is not a mainstream shipping method. But, if there is an urgent replenishment for Amazon FBA or other e-commerce platforms. AFUC will be considered due to its cost-effective cost than express and much shorter shipping time than sea freight. Latter part How much does a package or postal parcel cost? What item is suitable? Finally, here’s the last part I bet many people have heard about ePacket or China Postal Parcel and believe these two are one type of cheapest shipping solution for sending from China to the US. But very few people on the internet have introduced what the rough cost for using these methods is and how to apply. These two methods are only useful for people who are doing dropshipping business because they are cheap but very slow, and only suitable for tiny packages (less than 2kg).

Postal Parcel

Shipping Cost from China to the USA by Epacket

When you want to ship a small package, which is around 2kg weight, then it costs you $45 for sending by FedEx IP. So, ePacket is a better choice, which is an economical International express service of China Postal Express & logistics.

Okay, let me give you an intuitive sense of what this service is. You must have shopped on eBay or Aliexpress, right? Many cheap Chinese products are shipped directly from China to your doorsteps. Yes, the sellers transport the products via an ePacket. Now, read on to get a better understanding of the ePacket charging standard. Take note that the delivery costs for each country vary. Here, we are only going to discuss the ePacket delivery costs from China to the United States.

Country Fixed Fee /package Charge/weight (g) Starting Weight Weight Limit
USA 2.17 0.009 50g 2000g

Pay special attention to the size of the package

  • Maximum size: Length + Width +Height <90cm,The longest side = 60cm?If it’s round roll shape, its diameter x 2 + Length = 104cm,and its length = 90cm.
  • Minimum size: The length =14cm,the width =11cm?If it’s cylinder shape, its diameter x 2 + Length =17cm,and its length = 11cm.
  • ( Datasource:China Postal Express )
  • For example, one lipstick with package is 120g,then the total cost, $2.17 (Fixed Fee/package) + $0.009 x 120g = $3.25.

If a very small-light item, like a marking pen, which weighs around 35g, is to be shipped, then the shipping cost is $2.17 + $0.009 x 50g= $2.62. That is to say, if it is less than 50g, the fee shall be calculated according to 50g only. You see, isn’t it easy to calculate the price? Now that you understand the value let’s move on to shipping time. In the US, it usually takes you about 8-14r days to receive a package. In exceptional cases, after 1-2 months, you’ll receive nothing. Unlike express, ePacket clearance is a quick process in which the goods go through the customs in bulk and usually leave the port within 1-2 days.

But during the busy seasons, many packages are stranded at the airport for a long time, and hence, the shipping time accelerates and may be delayed by 1-2 months. So, the shipping time of the E-packet is volatile. Additionally, if the barcode of a package is damaged during transportation, the box will be stranded at the airport, and cannot be tracked in time.

In many cases, you won’t know where your package is, and it may get lost in transit. Are you thinking about claiming compensation from ePacket for your lost package? Well, it’s about time to remind you that ePacket doesn’t offer a loss claim. Get ready to hear the official of ePackage say that the average shipping time is 7-10 working days, and China post does not provide any compensation for delays beyond that. You are wondering if ePacket ships all types of goods? Certainly not! According to the provisions of international aviation, the following products can not be shipped, Powder, liquid, flammable and explosive goods, and other dangerous goods, as well as alcohol and tobacco, cash and securities, infringing products, etc.

Now, you’ll ask me, with so many flaws in ePacket, why does anyone choose this shipping method? Well, despite all its drawbacks, ePacket offers an economical shipping service. Many people are willing to bear the risks to save money. For instance, people who do dropship tend to use this shipping method.

Shipping from China to the USA by China Post (For small parcel)

I don’t want to put down this shipping method, but the fact remains that its shipping time is pretty unstable. Plus, unless you have insurance, China post won’t even compensate you if your package is lost. Moreover, this shipping method is not the most popular in China. There are only a few sellers on e-commerce platforms who use this method. For example, you are from America and want to buy 100 carbon pens from Aliexpress or Dhgate. The total weight of your package is about 2kg. You are not even in a hurry to receive the goods, and considering it’s costly to ship via express; Postal Parcel becomes the right choice. Also, if the package is lost after 1-2 months since the value of goods was not high, you will not miss a lot.

Delivery time to us for China Post:

  • The shipping time by sea is 1-2 months.
